Louver Fundamentals
A louver is an architectural element consisting of a series of angled slats or blades set within a frame, designed to allow controlled airflow and ventilation while blocking rain, debris, and direct sunlight. In commercial construction, louvers serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, providing building ventilation while contributing to facade design.
Free area refers to the total unobstructed open area through which air can pass, expressed as a percentage of the overall louver face area. Higher free area percentages indicate lower resistance to airflow, which is critical for HVAC system performance and energy efficiency.
Pressure drop is the reduction in air pressure as air passes through the louver. It is measured in inches of water column (in. w.g.) and directly affects fan sizing and energy consumption. Louvers with lower pressure drop reduce mechanical system load.
For coastal and hurricane-prone regions, wind-driven rain (WDR) performance is a critical specification parameter. WDR testing measures the volume of water that penetrates the louver at specified wind speeds, expressed in gallons per hour per square foot.
In Florida, buildings located within High Velocity Hurricane Zones (H.V.H.Z.) — primarily Miami-Dade and Broward counties — must use building products that have been tested and approved under the Florida Building Code. Paradise Louvers' Blade #1 system carries full H.V.H.Z. approval per Product Evaluation Report No. 25-1204.01.
